Kami-tsu-Maki (The Upper Scroll)

Chapter 14

Read this Fude well.
The more you read, the more shall all be made clear.

The kokoro (the inner heart) spoken of here is not the kokoro
that people commonly suppose.
Nor is the Mi-tama the Mi-tama
that people commonly suppose.

Mi-tama is that wherein body (mi) and soul (tama) have become one.
For the people of the Kami, there is no parting of body from soul.
The body is the soul; the soul is the body.

In foreign lands there are places of body alone,
and places of soul alone.
But with the Kami, body and soul are not divided.

When this is understood,
the Shikumi of the Kami shall little by little come clear.

The cleansing of the Mi-tama — the cleansing of the kokoro
is not the cleansing of the soul alone.
Body and soul together must be washed —
attend well to this.
What the Kami hath spoken shall not fail.
