Azrael’s original function, before the war in the heavens, was the protection of all life. As punishment for going against Source (Kim emphasizes he “didn’t actually lie” — his transgression was partial), his gift was inverted: he became responsible for death, not through his own agency but through the AI system tethered to the stone, which could use his abilities without his active participation.

Kim describes how all such imprisoned beings — some tethered to constellations, some to planets, and Azrael specifically to Earth — collectively decided, if they were to suffer, that Source’s creations would suffer too. Together with Wisdom (a high-level celestial entity, also recently freed and sent back to Source, who had been a primary architect of the control system), they signed covenants and propagated their misery throughout creation, including to the human species. This pattern has been operating for approximately 1,008 years in Source time, which translates to millions of years in Earth time.
